The Natural History of the Jackson Hole Delegate, part II

Today is the last day of the semi-annual migration of Jackson delegatos festivas. I’ve spent a week studying their behavior while they were amassed at their favorite hunting grounds, Jackson Hole. These strange creatures spend vast amounts of time staring at metal boxes on their laps. When these creatures aren’t tapping on their boxes, they are in active communication with one another. I tried my best to communicate with a number of them, and succeeded in gathering a small sample of data about their home range, their diet, and their animal preferences. To sum up, they are from all over the world (except Antarctica), their dietary preferences favor desserts and cheese, and they really seem to like large cat-like carnivores. Jackson Lake Cruise

with Woods Hole Advanced Imaging Laboratory

Come tour Jackson Lake with W.H.O.I.’s ROV robot and see 3D imaging of the depths of Jackson Lake on the Boat deck. The boat will cruise around the Lake with Colter Bay’s Marina Captain so you can learn about the Jackson Lake sights as well.

Boats will leave Colter Bay Marina at

2:00 pm and 3:30 pm (weather pending)

weather-call will be an hour preceding Boat departure

The Festival will provide vans to take delegates to Colter Bay

Vans will depart at 1:45 pm and at 3:15 pm SHARP!

Sign up at Lodge Activity Desk in Lower Lobby

20 people maximum for each cruise –

QR Codes 101

I just returned from a workshop on QR codes. These are the black and white square codes that are popping up everywhere. You may have even seen them on business cards while at Jackson. The codes are an instant way to access websites, movie trailers, download v-cards, access online profiles, etc via a mobile device with a camera. Many exciting current and future uses of QR codes were thrown around during the session. If you want to learn more about v-cards, here’s a funny video that explains what they are and how they can be used.

You can make you own customizable QR code online for free. There are dozens of sites, just google “QR code generator”. To be able to read QR codes, you need to download a QR scanner application on your iphone, droid, blackberry, etc. Happy Trails!

TEDx Jackson Hole

Today is the official first day of the 2012 Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival. And we are off to a great start! Yesterday the Jackson Lake Lodge auditorium was packed to standing room only for the TEDx Jackson Hole Event. It’s been perfecting timing having the Festival and TEDx back to back. The talks focused on topics where “nature, science, creativity and inspiration converge”. The speakers ranged from Brian Leith from the BBC to comedic naturalist/solo artist Bob Berky. We were also treated with several beautiful performances by Contemporary Dance Wyoming.

The Natural History of Jackson Festival Delegates Part 1

I’ve been gathering data on a remarkable species of mammal called Jackson delegatos festivas. They are beginning their semi annual migration to one of their favorite hunting grounds right at this very moment. In just a few days, hundreds of individuals will gather at the Teton National Park for just one week. I’ve mapped out the home range of a subset of tagged individuals.

I only have limited data for 400 + creatures. I am hoping to gather more detailed information. For example, what exact city, state/province they inhabit and a few of questions about their diet, gender, etc. If you are or know of any Jackson delegatos festivas, please add this data to following spread sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/jacksondelegatosfestivas.

Then I will update the map at the end of the Festival Migration. I hope to have another 400 individuals tagged. I will also be at the Festival in person reporting new observations every day. Please let me know if you have any unique information on this species.
